Overview

"How Not To Be A Junkie" is an eight episode, 1-hour semi-autobiographical series exploring addiction, sexual identity, trauma, grief, and the harsh realities of life in the 1990’s. The series floats back and forth between two important decades of Lex Fury, our lead character and narrator’s life. As a child in Iowa in the 1980’s, Lex uses fantasy and humor to cope and escape from feelings and emotions surrounding her dad's alcoholism, her budding Queer sexuality, her complicated yet emotional relationship with her mom, and from a world she fears she doesn't belong. Each time we visit Lex’s Iowa childhood, Lex uses wild descriptive V.O. to walk us through a world filled with nostalgia, fantasy, teenage angst and childhood adventures. After the death of her mom, the need for escape becomes even greater for 22-year-old Lex in Normal Heights, San Diego in the 1990’s, as we shift from the innocent world of fantasy into the raw and unforgiving world of addiction. Our once full of life young 12-year-old, has become a girl you would barely recognize, although glimpses of her young self can’t help but shine through. This series will travel in past and present time with Lex, as she revisits moments from childhood until adulthood that led her to addiction, showcasing how unresolved trauma can impact us in ways we don't understand, and ultimately exploring how a young Junkie trying to stay clean, navigates getting hit again and again with major life events she never saw coming.
